S.258 –
William H. Danforth Chapel, Lakeland, Florida CLICK HERE FOR INTERIOR PHOTOS Photographed in 1995, February 2010 &
July 17, 2011. As is well known, the
college campus is the largest collection of FLW buildings anywhere. Click here for a page about the
general characteristics of the buildings. Wright designed two chapels for the college
– the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel
(the first building constructed) and this, the “Minor Chapel” – named after
college supporter William Danforth. The Pfeiffer Chapel’s design apparently
struck some people as being not enough like a church, so Wright’s design for
this chapel is more conventional (well, at least to the extent Wright could
be conventional). Danforth was the
founder of the Ralston Purina Company in St. Louis, Missouri. He funded the construction of chapels at 24
U.S. colleges (and one in Japan). Constructed
in 1955, this chapel is immediately adjacent to the Pfeiffer Chapel. 2010 photos |
