William H. Danforth Chapel, Lakeland, Florida –
interior CLICK HERE FOR EXTERIOR PHOTOS Photographed in February 2010, December 27,
2010, & July 17, 2011. Unlike the Pfeiffer Chapel, the Danforth Chapel still uses its original pews as designed
by Wright and constructed by the students of Florida Southern College. The other furniture – altar, pulpit, and
straight-back chairs – are also Wright originals. This is the only large-scale stained glass
project Wright constructed on campus; the other campus buildings use small
art glass and clear glass designs. Sometime between February and December
2010, the cushions were removed from most of the seats. When I visited in November 2012, though,
the pews in the chapel had cushions. A
few pews without cushions were being stored in a separate room (the room with
the fireplace). |
Two different lengths
of pews were used – two-leg and three-leg

side room, and a photo of that room shot through the glass. Most noteworthy is a fireplace in the center
of the room.

The floor was cleared
for an event, allowing some interesting views of the space – notice the
cushions had been removed from some seats
