S.251 –
Annie Merner Pfeiffer Chapel, Florida Southern
College, Lakeland, Florida CLICK HERE FOR INTERIOR PHOTOS As is well known, the college campus
is the largest collection of FLW buildings anywhere. Click here for a page about the
general characteristics of the buildings.
This was the first FLW building completed on campus; started in 1939,
it was completed in 1941. Two walls
and the skylight collapsed in 1944’s Cuba-Florida
Hurricane, and were restored. Photographed in 1995, February 2010
& October 17, 2012. Opus: T.3805 FEBRUARY 2010 |
To the left of the
Pfeiffer Chapel we find the rear of the Danforth
Chapel. To the right: orange trees!
The lower
steps lead to the Danforth Chapel, which is next to the Pfeiffer Chapel
Note the angular
brickwork at the bottom of the building where it meets the concrete apron. This was designed to give the impression that
the building is floating in air.
1995 PHOTOS
Note the Espalanade
(covered walkway) in the left photo; this style was a replacement, and
stretched to the Polk Science building.
It was later replaced
with a replica of the original Wright design.
