S.252 – E.T. Roux
Library, Lakeland, Florida Later renamed Thad
Buckner Building (in 1968) Interior views of
William M. Hollis Exhibition & Seminar Room CLICK HERE FOR EXTERIOR PHOTOS Photographed February 6, 2010 & October 17, 2012. The carpets and drapes are not
original. Wright had designed the
building without drapes, but Wisconsin Frank underestimated the intense power
of the Sunshine State and drapes had to be added later (in a letter
in the college’s archives, college president Ludd
Spivey took Wright to task for the overbearing heat in the Pfeiffer Chapel). The chairs and the circular furniture (with
built-in book shelves) are original – the college archives shows this
furniture in one
photo of the library between 1945 and 1951. The chairs are very likely stock
merchandise. Whether the tables/desks
show Wright’s hand is not known. |
Right: molded glass blocks for the cutouts;
they would be separated from the disc. I
believe these are the reproduction pieces of glass;
I was told that replicas were given away as
souvenirs during a fundraiser.
