S.016 – Thomas Gale Residence,
1027 Chicago Avenue, Oak Park, Illinois This is one of three houses on
Chicago Avenue, just a half block west of the FLW Home & Studio. Looking at their porches, they are lined up
left-to-right (or west to east) as follows: R.P. Parker Residence at 1019
Chicago Ave. (S.017), a
non-FLW property at 1023 Chicago Ave., this house at #1027, and the Walter
Gale Residence at 1031 Chicago Ave. (S.020). Some publications had the wrong
order, designating the houses respectively as Thomas Gale, Parker, and Walter
Gale. Prof.
Storrer’s third edition of his catalog rectifies this error. Thomas Gale’s widow Laura built
another Wright design in Oak Park (S.098),
and the Gales also commissioned Wright to design cottages for the family and
for rental in Whitehall, Michigan (S.088
et seq.). Photographed on April 2, 2017,
August 30, 2009 and in August 1991 (bottom of page). Project number: T.9203 (Heinz)
