6 Elizabeth Court, Oak Park, Illinois

Pepe the Dog’s resting place

4 Elizabeth Court

MAP

Mr. Gale commissioned one house (one of the “bootleg” houses, S.016), and Mrs. Gale later commissioned this home and a complex of three summer cottages up Lake Michigan in Michigan (collectively cataloged as S.088).  This is a couple blocks from the FLW Home & Studio (S.002 & S.004).  Photographed in August 1991 and on April 2, 2017.

A dog that befriended Wright, nicknamed “Pepe,” was buried next door at 4 Elizabeth Court.  A small engraved stone marks his resting place, and brochures are sometimes available from a rack outside the home.  Photos are shown at the bottom of this page.

A marker was laid in 2016 after the bones of Pepe were found when city workers were digging for utilities.  The brochure is quoted in this article from the Oak Park website, “Solutions to the mystery of Pepe the dog.”
