S.054 – Ward W. Willits Residence 1445 Sheridan Road, Highland Park,
Illinois S.055 – Ward W. Willits Gardener’s
Cottage & Stables 1450 Waverly Road, Highland Park,
Illinois Directly behind this 1901 design –
one of the earliest Prairie-style homes – is a gardener’s cottage with
stables, designated as S.055. In
addition to the two Willits projects, Highland Park is home to the Adams
Residence (S.108) and the
Millard Residence (S.126),
both on Lake Avenue. Sheridan Road roughly parallels the
Lake Michigan shoreline and runs from Wrigleyville through the North Shore
communities. A few Frank Lloyd Wright
homes are found along this stretch of Sheridan (Bach Residence in Chicago, S.193; Glasner Residence in
Glencoe, S.109; Brigham
Residence in Glencoe, S.184),
and many more are within a few blocks of this artery. Photographed on April 26, 2014. Project number: T.0208 (both
buildings) |

S.055 –Gardener’s Cottage &
Stables
This home sits directly behind the
larger Ward Willits Residence (S.054).
Although built as an outbuilding for the main house, over time it has
become its own separate residence – a common process in older neighborhoods
when garages become carriage houses and once-plentiful estates are subdivided
into new developments.
Photographed on April 26, 2014.
The edge of the
Willits Residence (S.054) can be seen to the left in this photo. This view is from Sheridan Road.
