S.414 – R.W. Lindholm Service Station,

Cloquet Avenue (Route 45) at Route 33, Cloquet, Minnesota

This was Wright’s only service station built during his lifetime, and it remains open for business (another service station design has been built in a museum in Buffalo).  You are permitted to wander the grounds and take photographs.  The second-floor waiting room is locked, although the stairs leading to it remain accessible.

The gas station was commissioned after Wright had already designed the owner’s home (S.353), which was just a couple miles south along Route 33.  The house has since been moved to Pennsylvania for reconstruction at the Polymath Park architectural park.

Photographed on May 14, 2012.
