S.401 – Wyoming Valley Grammar
School, Route 23, Wyoming Valley, Wisconsin CLICK HERE FOR EXTERIOR PHOTOS Photographed on May 16, 2012. The school has two classrooms and an
assembly room (with audio-visual booth and kitchen), separated by a
corridor. Multiple grades occupied
each classroom simultaneously. Two cloakrooms
have been eliminated to allow for enlargement of the rest rooms. Back-to-back fireplaces anchor the school
and share the central chimney. Only
one was used, though – the building was heated by gas forced-air. There is a small utility cellar under the
elevated portion of the assembly room.
Wright did not design furniture for the
building; standard school desks were used.
The light fixtures, when reflected in the windows, give the illusion
of shining almost infinitely into space. The structure now serves as a community
center and is open to the public during events. |
