S.319 – Kenneth & Phyllis
Laurent Residence, 4646 Spring Brook Road, Rockford,
Illinois The home was designed for Mr. Laurent, a
veteran paralyzed during WW2. Mrs.
Laurent saw a magazine article about Wright and persuaded her husband to
contact Wright in 1948. Mr. Laurent
used a wheelchair, leading to the only home designed by Wright for a person
with a handicap. It was finished in
1952 and is the only FLW structure in Rockford (although the Pettit Mortuary Chapel (S.116)
is in nearby Belvidere). Mr. and Mrs. Laurent both passed
away in 2012. A private foundation
acquired the house in 2011 when the Laurents moved
to an assisted living residence. The Laurents had been the only residents of the home, and the
foundation also acquired all their furniture.
The house was opened for tours on select weekends in 2014. Photographed on August 30, 2009. |
