S.284 – Lowell & Agnes Walter
Residence – “Cedar Rock” Cedar Rock State Park, Quasqueton, Iowa S.284B – Gate S.284C – River Pavilion
(boathouse) Paving contractor
Lowell Walter commissioned this house overlooking the Wapsipinicon River in
the early 1940s. The house was
completed in 1950 and was used seasonally.
The property was eventually donated (with all furnishings) to the
State of Iowa for use as a state park.
Additional land was acquired to help assure the surroundings remained
unchanged as well. The property is
open for tours during the warmer months. The roof is a
bathtub-style roof with curves that are repeated in the interior. The house has one of Wright’s limited red
tiles. A round pool – quite
reminiscent of the Waterdome at Florida Southern
College (S.255A), was not
shown on the original plans but was never objected to when Wright visited
again, so it is believed to be at least an authorized addition. Also built was a “Council Fire” fire ring
(S.284A, not photographed). Photographed on
September 10, 2017. Opus: T4505 Tourist information literature (PDF) |
