Affleck Residence, 925 Bloomfield Woods Court,
Bloomfield Hills, Michigan Former
address: 1925 North Woodward Avenue The Affleck Residence, built in 1941,
serves as a mini-Fallingwater. It was built over a small stream, and has a
horizontal access window near the entrance that can be opened to promote air
circulation. Fallingwater
has a similar feature (although Fallingwater’s
access panel leads to a stairway down to the water feature). Lawrence Technological University students
have helped restore the property, and also contribute their own designs for
interior furnishings. Interior: photographed on December 22,
2012. Motif repeated

Horizontal windows open
up over the stream and allow air circulation
Staggered cypress is
used throughout the house. It is screwed
to the studs (something I haven’t seen before),
and all screw heads
are turned to the horizontal position.
The staggered cypress is even used for doors (right – also note the
piano hinge).
The wooden strip in
the photo at right conceals the wiring.
Speakers are
concealed in the ceiling
