S.274 – Gregor Affleck Residence,

925 Bloomfield Woods Court, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan

Former address: 1925 North Woodward Avenue

Official website

INTERIOR PHOTOS

The Affleck Residence, built in 1941, serves as a mini-Fallingwater.  It was built over a small stream, and has a horizontal access window near the entrance that can be opened to promote air circulation.  Fallingwater has a similar feature (although Fallingwater’s access panel leads to a stairway down to the water feature).

The house is currently owned by Lawrence Technological University. It was restored (in 2009) and is occasionally available for tours or for college events like wine tasting parties.  In 2011 it appeared in a television advertisement for Chrysler.  Students at Lawrence Tech were actively involved in the restoration effort, and continue to visit the home to study historic preservation, design, engineering, and other topics.

The school also offers an on-line gift shop featuring unique items tied to the house and its restoration.

Note that the address was changed in recent years, shifting from the main roadway to the side street.  Its former address was 1925 North Woodward, an address that no longer appears on the map after the Woodward addresses were realigned by the post office.  The new address also does not appear on Google Maps; I don’t know if it’s because the street may be a private road.  This location does appear on Mapquest.  In any event, Bloomfield Woods Court is north of Long Lake Road (and slightly north of Opdyke Road) at approximately 40925 Woodward Avenue.

Exterior: Photographed on April 18, 2016, July 15, 2009 and in February 1992 (winter photos at bottom of page).  Interior: photographed on December 22, 2012.

The door was added later.  It protects a stairway to the roof (partially visible in the upper part of the left photo).

Why did it need protection?  Because deer would climb the steps to the roof.
