S.239 – Herbert F. Johnson Residence “Wingspread” – Furniture

OFFICIAL WEBSITE

Photographed on May 12, 2012.  Built in 1937 for the president of the Johnson Wax company.  Around that time, Wright was also designing and building the Johnson Wax headquarters in Racine, a few miles south (S.237).

Wingspread served as a residence until 1961, when the Johnson family donated it to a foundation for use as a convention and meeting center.  It continues in that role today.  Although it does not offer formal tours, the facility is open to the public.  Photography is permitted throughout the property, with the exception of some work areas.
