S.065 – Edward C. Waller Gates, Auvergne Place at Lake Street,
River Forest, Illinois The gates once marked the entrance
to the Edward C. Waller estate (S.047), which included stables (S.066). There are six rectangular stone pillars,
iron fencework (gates having been lost to time),
and two lanterns. Waller also commissioned Wright to
design Chicago-area apartment buildings (S.030 & S.031) and a bathing pavilion
for his northern Michigan retreat (S.166).
Auvergne Place also is home to one
of Wright’s seminal efforts, the Winslow Residence (S.024), and you pass through
these gates to reach that beautiful home. Photographed on May 17, 2012 &
August 3, 2014. Project number: T.9902 (Heinz
guide) or T.0108 (Storrer Companion) (encompassed
the entire estate; only these structures remain) 2012
