Fountain of the Pioneers

Bronson Park, Kalamazoo, Michigan

MAP

Alfonso Iannelli was an Italian-born sculptor who worked with Frank Lloyd Wright on the Midway Gardens Sprites.  He also designed the Fountain of the Pioneers at Kalamazoo’s Bronson Park (1939).

Due to controversy over depictions of Native Americans, the sculpture was removed in late April 2018.  The prairie-style base is destined for destruction, while the sculpture itself has been placed in safe storage where it can do no further harm.

I arrived a few hours late for its ignoble banishment.  To chronicle the event, I present a couple pictures of the base before its demolition.

Photographed on April 25, 2018.
