FURNITURE In 1911 Frank Lloyd Wright began
purchasing land in Spring Green, home of his maternal relatives, to establish
a school, studio and summer home. When
he established Taliesin II in Arizona, he alternated between the two sites
(often depending on the weather). When
Wright passed away in 1959, Taliesin passed to the Frank Lloyd Wright
Foundation, which continues to operate educational institutions and tourist
sites on the land. Many of the facilities can be seen
from a distance from public roadways, but the only way to get up close is to
take one of several tours that start at the visitor center (S.367). Beginning in 2016 the tours permit interior
photography. Photographed on May 16, 2012 from public
roads; additional photos taken on April 30, 2016.

S.134 – Andrew T.
Porter Residence “Tanyderi”
This small home was built for Wright’s
sister Jane and her husband, Andrew, in 1907 near the Romeo & Juliet
Windmill. It has evolved into use by the
Taliesin Fellowship, and has been altered substantially over the years to
accommodate new uses. These distant
photos were taken on April 30, 2016 through the mist during a tour of the
Taliesin home and studio.

Wright designed for his aunts Nell and
Jane Lloyd Jones a couple times. They
ran a school in the family’s home valley of Spring Green and Wright designed a
boarding school for their use in 1887 (S.001) while working for Joseph
Silsbee. That school, featuring
Silsbee’s popular shingle style, was demolished to make way for a more Wrightian design in 1902 (S.069). Although it sits at the opposite end of the
property, the school was absorbed into the Taliesin community in 1932 when a
drafting studio was added (S.228A). The
1902 school was converted in 1933 into the Hillside Playhouse as part of the
Taliesin fellowship (S.228B). After
being destroyed by fire, the Playhouse was replaced with the Hillside Theatre
(S.228C). This entire building remains
in use today; the Taliesin fellowship spends winters in Arizona at Taliesin
West, and returns here in May.
