S.336 – S.P. Elam Residence, 309
21st Street S.W., Austin, Minnesota Austin is the home of the Hormel
company and the Spam Museum. As
fascinating as that may be, the real gem of the city is this outstanding
massive home. Located close to the street,
it overwhelms the viewer with its angles and its windows. The kitchen had to be finished without
Wright’s involvement after a falling-out between the architect and owner over
its design. Reportedly, Wright refused
to accommodate the thin window seen in the third photograph below. A wing of the house is now being
rented to the public. The nearby city
of Owatonna has a Louis Sullivan-designed bank. Photographed on May 15, 2012. Opus: T.5105 |
The thin vertical
window on the second (main) level is reportedly the cause of
the owner’s falling
out with Wright – Wright was against it
