The Muirhead residence is known as the only working farmhouse built by Wright.  The budget was $25,000; when the projected cost reached around $70,000, the family knew it would have to contribute labor.  Robert, Jr., who is still active in 2014, assists with tours of the home and discusses brief encounters with Wright.  In particular, he was home alone when Wright pulled up in a fancy car, threw down some stakes, and announced that this would be the location of the home.

Photographed on May 4, 2014, during tours benefiting the local high school’s band boosters.

The room also served then and now as an office.  Mr. Muirhead dealt with customers and suppliers from this area, and repaired his equipment.  All cabinets are original.

LIGHT DETAILS:

lightbox.jpg  IMG_2302.JPG

Original recessed lighting was provided by an ordinary bulb in an ordinary box, covered by a wood panel with a hole in it.

A clear marble rested above the hole to diffuse the light.  Problems: heat built up, and changing bulbs required

unscrewing 4 screws.  A safer and more efficient system was later added, and can be seen in several of these photos.
