S.311 – Charles E. Weltzheimer
Residence, 127 Woodhaven Drive/534 Morgan Street, Oberlin, Ohio Built in 1948/1949, The house is known locally
as the Weltzheimer/Johnson house, a nod to a subsequent owner (Oberlin
College art professor Ellen Johnson) who engaged in an extensive restoration
and gave the house to the college upon her death in 1992. The house is open
seasonally for tours, and interior photography is permitted during the tours.
This L-shaped Usonian is the only Wright Usonian
outside of California to use redwood in its construction. Like Wright’s preferred wood choice,
redwood is highly resistant to insects and rot. Photographed on December 8, 2015. |
