2822 Taliesin Drive Four Wright designs are grouped
together on the appropriately named Taliesin Drive in the Parkwyn Village
subdivision. There are 42 lots in the original
Parkwyn subdivision plat. They were
originally designed in circular lots, but were later switched to more
conventional methods of measuring where one man’s land begin and another’s
ends (i.e., straight lines). Wright
had designed several houses, but only four were built using his designs. Various apprentices and other modern
architects designed others home in this subdivision; it is sometimes
difficult to discern which ones are the actual Wright designs. A sampling of look-alike homes is included
at the bottom of this page. This area was mainly designed for
workers at the nearby Upjohn Company, a manufacturer of pharmaceuticals
(although McCartney was a dentist and Winn was an insurance agent). They were interested in Wright designs but
did not want to travel the extra distance to Galesburg (S.294 – S.297) in the days
(1948-1950) before the U.S. 12 (later Interstate 94) freeway reached this
area (1958). Three, and maybe four, houses look out on
Little Asylum Lake (marked as a pond on some maps), which is part of Western
Michigan University’s Asylum
Lake Preserve – the site of an old state hospital. Trails
approach the lake, and some websites say you can see the houses from those
trails. I have not confirmed this, but
bring a long lens if you go. Photographed on May 2, 2016, *July

Prof. Storrer has assigned four
numbers to this project:S.299 for the main house (1949), S.299A for a bedroom
addition in 1956, S.299B for a remodeling project in 1956, and S.299C for the
addition of a carport. Unfortunately,
this house is a bit far from the road and concealed by trees, so it is
difficult to see any of these four components.
