S.283 – Herbert & Katherine Jacobs Residence II,

3995 Shawn Trail, Middleton, Wisconsin

Mr. & Mrs. Jacobs had commissioned an earlier home in Madison (S.234).  This was built a mere eight years later, in 1944.

The house represents Wright’s initial foray into use of circular patterns.  Unfortunately, the house, prominently featuring stone, is not visible from the surrounding roads due to trees circling the residence.  I was only able to catch a glimpse of the stonework.

It is located in Middleton, a suburb just west of Madison, and is located within a mile of the US-14 freeway (“the Beltline”).

Visitors should be aware that an adjoining house – which appears to be on the same property, and is very close to the driveway markers designating the house as a historic landmark – is not a Wright design.

This house is next door and might trick unwary visitors into believing they had found Wright’s design
