S.261 – S.264 – Auldbrass Plantation for C. Leigh Stevens 7 River Road, Yemassee,
South Carolina Numerous buildings were designed and built
for this 1940 modern plantation. Prof.
Storrer numbers them as follows: S.261 – Stevens residence S.262 – 2 guest cottages (7 were planned) S.263A – Granary (barn) S.263B – Chicken Runs S.263C – Shop S.263D – Caretaker’s Quarters S.264A – Stables S.264B – Kennels S.264C – Manager’s Office In theory, the sheer number of buildings
could be considered competition for Florida Southern College’s claim to the
largest number of single-site Wright buildings, but the complex designated as
S.263 and S.264 represents interconnected buildings. The barn, shop, and chicken runs (S.263) were
rebuilt in 1989-1990 after a fire. Movie producer Joel Silver acquired this
property and devoted substantial resources to its restoration. The property is available for limited
public tours once a year. The buildings
are not clearly visible from the public roadway, which is where I took these
photos. A large telephoto lens is
recommended. Photographed on June 3, 2014. |
