S.155 – City National Bank
Building, 5 W. State Street, Mason City, Iowa S.156 – Park Inn Hotel, 15 W. State
Street S.157 – James E. Blythe &
J.E.E. Markley Law Offices remodeling Photographed on September 25, 2011. To analyze this set of projects, it is best
to look back to 1909 & 1910 when they were built. There are technically two buildings here,
although they are connected. The bank
faces Federal Avenue. Around the
corner, the Park Inn Hotel faces State Street. The bank has three stories, and a law firm
occupied offices on the third floor.
While Wright designed the entire building, he was also hired to design
the remodeling into law offices. The
offices on the third floor had an entrance on State Street, between the hotel
and the bank buildings. Today, the entire stretch of buildings has
been converted (or re-converted) into a hotel under the name The Historic
Park Inn Hotel. The bank’s main floor
serves as a conference room for the hotel.
The law offices serve as a business center and law library. The hotel is, of course, open to the
public, and the staff is willing to allow fans of the great architect to
wander the hallways and enjoy the $20 million renovation. In addition, guided tours are offered. Further east on State Street, you will find
the G.C. Stockman Residence
(S.139), which now is open as a museum. CLICK HERE FOR INTERIOR PHOTOS |
