S.099A –Westcott Residence Pergola
and Garage, 1340 East High Street,
Springfield, Ohio CLICK HERE FOR PHOTOS OF MAIN
RESIDENCE Photographed on February 21, 2010. The pergola is original. Even the wooden trellis above is 90%
original, having been dismantled and stored until the home’s restoration in
2005. The garage, likewise, is original. Burton Westcott was an automobile
manufacturer, so his garage went directly into service for motor cars and
never served as a carriage house or stable.
Its original design included a turntable for rotating the car, but by
the time the garage was built cars featured a newfangled “reverse” gear and
the turntable was unnecessary. A full
service pit is located below the floor.
A new floor has been inserted, as the garage now serves as the
reception/visitor center for tours, and as the home’s gift shop. Smaller planters
