S.094 – Horse Show Fountain/Wright-Bock Fountain [Replica], Scoville Park,

Lake Street at North Oak Park Avenue, Oak Park, Illinois

Photographed on September 1, 2009.  According to William Allin Storrer, the plans were drawn up in 1903, and the original fountain was dedicated in 1909.  By 1969, the original fountain was crumbling.  The city commissioned a replica to be built in a different part of the park.  Sculptor Richard Bock’s contributions were imitated by a modern sculptor to capture the spirit of the original.

Researchers have argued whose name should go first – Wright’s, or sculptor Bock.  As the story of the Midway Garden sprites tells us, Wright was not afraid to steal credit for all aspects of his projects.  But Bock was a regular contributor to many of Wright’s projects (including the FLW Studio).  Any controversy is fueled more by modern academics than by Wright’s own words.
