S.049 – Stephen A. Foster Residence,

S.049 - Stable

12147 South Harvard Avenue, Chicago, Illinois

MAP

Designed for attorney Stephen Foster, this residence in the West Pullman district (on the South Side) shares the neighborhood with many other elegant homes.  It sits on the corner of West 122nd Street, and has an alley – thus giving views from three sides of the house.  We see one of the early “hidden doorway” homes here, as well as an early nod to Japanese influences.

A “Chicago Landmark” plaque is embedded into the ground at the street corner.

Tip for South Side street addresses: on the north/south streets such as Harvard, the first three digits tell you where to look on the numbered street grid.  “121xx” is between 121st and 122nd.  On the streets below 100th, the first two digits (e.g., 98xx) tell you the location.
