4858 Kenwood Avenue, Chicago, Illinois S.133 – George Blossom Garage,
1322 East 49th Street, Chicago, Illinois These houses sit side-by-side in
Chicago’s Kenwood neighborhood, a few blocks from the Museum of Science &
Industry and just north of the Hyde Park community. Both were side projects while Wright was
employed by Louis Sullivan, and both mainly show adherence to traditional
designs. The McArthur Residence receives
three project numbers in William Allin Storrer’s book – S.011 for the house
constructed in 1892, S.011A* for its 1900 remodeling, and S.011B* for a
stable/garage built in 1900. Blossom
receives two numbers – S.014 for the 1892 house, and S.133 for the garage
facing 49th Street built in 1907. Wright also renovated a dining room
two houses away, at 4842 Kenwood (S.012 – no photos). The Robie house (S.127) and the site of the
demolished Midway Gardens (S.180)
are nearby. The McArthur and Blossom residences
both hit the real estate market in October 2012. A
gallery of photos from the McArthur listing – including interior photos – is
available. The new owners of Blossom
commissioned an extensive refurbishment program in 2015 & 2016, and I was
fortunate to take pictures of the construction. * S.011A & S.011B were originally
numbered as S.012 & S.013 in earlier editions of the Storrer guide. Photographed in August 1993^ and May
23, 2016. Project numbers: McArthur –
