S.009 – James Charnley Residence, 1365 North Astor Street, Chicago,
Illinois This 1891 residence was designed by
Sullivan and Wright, and now serves as headquarters for the Society of
Architectural Historians. Tours are
offered. It sits at the corner of North Astor
and East Schiller on the near north side of Chicago near Lake Shore Drive,
and it can be a maze to navigate through one-way streets and typical Chicago
road construction. The building can be
viewed from three sides, as there is an alley behind – although its alley
views are unremarkable. It is also
difficult to get a photo without cars in front due to typical Chicago
congestion. Wright also designed a cottage for
Charnley in Mississippi (S.007); it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina (as
was a Wright cottage for Louis Sullivan, S.005). Photographed on November 9,
2013. Project number: T.9101 |
